I love it. It is difficult to get rid of romance in the viewer's eye because of the expectations that the advertising industry has carefully set up in us over the decades.
Talking of which - have you ever considered selling the publishing rights of your paintings (this does not preclude you selling the painting itself)? They would make stunning book covers. An illustrators' agency might be very receptive to your work.
I'm not sure that I see this as overtly romantic. If you deepen and darken it then it will become more somber. Look at the works of Rembrandt and his color and light. Use jarring combinations of colors and you will give it an edginess. Use discord colors and it will have a slight uneasiness to it. Since you work with impasto techniques you could even mix grit and sand in your paint and use drab colors to mimic old walls to contrast the vivid hues. I'll look forward to seeing the finished painting.
